Porto Rico Importing Co.

Veteran coffee seller who specialises in international brews loose teas and a selection.

The scent of freshly roasted beans fills the air when you walk into this West Village shop. The shelves are lined with jars and bags of dark brown beans, along with coffee-making equipment, tea accessories, and sugar.

Originally opened in 1907, Porto Rico was founded by Italian immigrant Patsy Albanese. Greenwich Village at the time was experiencing an influx Italian immigrants, who had opened businesses in order to meet their culinary needs. Albanese named her shop after the well-known Puerto Rican coffee she imported (and sold) which was so popular that even the Pope was a fan.

Today, Porto Rico sells 130 varieties of beans from around the globe at three locations in New York City including their Bleecker Street location, Essex Market and online. The company also roasts its own beans and offers wholesale distribution to 350 restaurants in NYC and Brooklyn.

Peter Longo, current owner and president, grew up in the family bakery located on Bleecker Street, where his father ran Porto Rico. He still runs the business in the same way as his father and grandfather.

Sey Coffee

The shop is located along Grattan Street in Morgantown, Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood, Sey Coffee is both a cafe and a roaster. Co-founders Tobin Polk and Lance Schnorenberg, both 33, started roasting in a fourth-floor loft just around the corner at their new location in 2011 under the name Lofted Coffee (with local clients including Greenpoint's Budin and Soho cart service Peddler).

Sey's focus on purchasing micro-lots, or even whole harvests from single farmers earned it the praise of knowledgeable New York City coffee aficionados. The last time Sey was in the market, he purchased a six-bag micro lot of Danilo Dones Sitio Catucai from Brazil's Espirito Santa region. The beans were handpicked at peak ripeness, floated to remove defects, then dry fermented for 36 hours prior to being dried on the farm. The result is a coffee with hints of melons and berries.

Sey's dedication to holistically improving the wellbeing of growers, staff and customers extends beyond the store. It makes use of composts and biodegradable disposables to keep waste out of the garbage dumps. This helps to reduce greenhouse gases as well as nourish the soil. It also eliminates gratuity, a move that puts baristas in a position to support their livelihoods and encourage them to focus on their profession.

La Cabra

La Cabra is a modern specialty bulk buy coffee beans brand that was established in Aarhus, Denmark in 2012. The company began with a small store and a dedicated team. Their honest and innovative approach to providing an outstanding coffee experience has earned them a loyal following, not just in their own town but also around the world.

La Carba follows a strict procedure to identify their ideal beans. They go through hundreds of varieties every year to find those that best meet their ideals. Then, they roast them in a very light style then dial them in to achieve their desired flavor profile. This gives the coffees a more vibrant taste and clarity.

The East Village store opened last October with a sleek minimalist design. It's been praised by international coffee aficionados for its exacting pour-overs and baked goods supervised by head baker Jared Sexton, who's previously worked at Bien Cuit and Dominique Ansel.

The shop uses the La Marzocco modbar, and the cups and plates are designed by Wurtz ceramics in Horsens, a father and son studio. In a recent interview with Atlanta coffee beans London Shops General Manager Ian Walla revealed that La Cabra serves 250 different types of coffee per day and typically has seven or eight varieties on offer at any given time.

The Roasting Plant Coffee

The Roasting Plant A multi-unit coffee retailer roasts and brews coffee on site. Each cup is roasted and brewed according to your preferences in less than one second. It searches countries far and far to find the finest specialty beans, which are directly sourced providing customers with choice and quality.

The roaster on site uses fluid bed technology which is quite different from the drum-type machines that are commonly used in many UK coffee shops. The beans are blown through a heated box with high-velocity air, which is circulated. This keeps the beans suspended and ensures a consistent roasting speed.

I tried the Sumatran Coffee and it was incredibly rich and velvety with a smooth taste. Dark chocolate was evident in the aroma. As you sipped the coffee, there were subtle citrus fruit aromas.

The coffee that has been roasted is transported to the Eversys super-automatic brewing systems and brewed to your specification within less than a minute. Customers can choose from a selection of nine single origin choices and a range of blends.

Parlor Coffee

Parlor Coffee was founded in 2012 in a barbershop equipped with a single group espresso machine. It has since morphed into a burgeoning coffee roastery, whose coffee beans are sold in top cafes as well as restaurants and home brewers across the city. Parlor is dedicated to sourcing top-quality beans from across the globe, each of which is a long, arduous journey before reaching the hands of its roasters.

The owners, who self-described as "passionate about coffee beans for sale and believe that a good cup of coffee should be accessible to everyone," have created a space that is down-to earth with chalkboards, compost bins and up-cycled products, and a minimalist interior.

Imagine it as a brewery tasting area where you can taste and smell the beans in the ground. They vary from earthy to chocolaty (one was similar to tomato!). It's a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the trip.
