How to Replace an audi q7 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

g28-car-keys-logo-white-green.pngThe sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

happy-african-american-businessman-holdiIf this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU
