How to Replace an audi key Fob Not working G28 Engine Speed Sensor

woman-showing-the-car-keys-2022-12-16-22Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are various connector pins, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement. The good news is that they are very cheap and easy to find particularly when you're looking at the Bosch unit which is what ours are. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your audi a3 key replacement since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to regulate fuel and boost, and also timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is a typical component across the Audi 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
