How to Replace an Audi A1 key Fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is failing and requires replacement. The good news is that they are very affordable and easily accessible particularly in the case of a Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi key replacement since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the car's engine is turning. If the sensor fails, it can cause problems for the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is a typical component across the audi replacement key fob 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
