Private ADHD Titration

iampsychiatry-logo-wide.pngThere is currently a national shortage of medications to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing issues and a growing global demand.

Our service is able to offer private ADHD treatment as an alternative to waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessment fees cover the cost of one prescription.

Titration

A comprehensive assessment of your ADHD symptoms will be conducted by a highly experienced consultant Psychiatrist. This includes a medical history and an assessment using the standard ADHD rating scales and questionnaires.

After your examination, you will be informed that medication may be beneficial for your situation. This will be discussed at your follow-up appointment (which could be in person by video link, in person or via phone). Your clinician will discuss the various medication options available. If you decide to start medication, we will help you the opportunity to increase your dosage to ensure the best balance of benefits and side effects for you.

This process may take several weeks, and requires adjusting your child's dosage slowly until the right balance is achieved. It's not uncommon to need to titrate two or three medicines before finding the one that is best for your child's ADHD symptoms. It is crucial that parents are involved in the titration process and be aware of their child's behavior so they can inform doctors if the medication is helping or causing adverse reactions.

If you do not decide to return to NHS treatment and have decided to return to NHS care, your medication will be given as an individual prescription that you will need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fee). You will need to attend six-monthly appointments to check your medications. This includes the measurement of pulse and blood pressure. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

Once the assessment is completed after the assessment is completed, you can make follow-up appointments with your psychiatrist. The appointment is typically conducted via zoom video call. In some circumstances, it might be possible to have an audio-only consultation to be scheduled (again at an additional cost).

We will then discuss treatment options and decide on an individualised, bespoke ADHD medication adjustment. This will include a review and discussion of your medication dose and any adverse effects you may be experiencing. The cost of these titration sessions is PS150 for face-to face sessions and PS60 for telephone or online video consultations. The cost of medication is additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The psychiatrist will ask questions about your family history and the impact of your ADHD symptoms on your life, and any relationship problems or mental health issues you might be suffering from. This is because ADHD can be a genetic condition and it is important to look into any family history that may suggest that you are at risk of developing the disorder.

It is important that you are honest and transparent to the doctor during the assessment, since the information they receive will be used to determine whether your ADHD fits the diagnostic criteria. This is a crucial step because a wrong diagnosis could result in an inappropriate prescription of medication.

If you decide to seek treatment for ADHD, we'll arrange an appointment to follow-up with a psychiatrist who specializes in this area. If you'd like to begin treatment right away, you can do this at the time of diagnosis. Or you can wait two weeks to consider the implications of the diagnosis and the options available to you.

We suggest that if are unsure about your preferences, talk to your GP prior to scheduling your private assessment. Some providers have different guidelines regarding whether they require a GP letter. We also suggest that you check whether your GP accepts a "Shared Care Agreement that means that after you have been discharged from the clinic you will be sent back to them to get the prescription for the medication.

Medication

Medication is a key element of the process for many people who are seeking an official ADHD diagnosis. Getting prescriptions from an NHS psychiatrist can be a hassle and lengthy. NHS waiting lists can be notoriously long and GPs might be reluctant to refer their patients to specialist services.

Requesting your GP to refer you to Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry UK and adhd titration waiting list 360). This means that you can choose a provider that offers an assessment and titration service. This will help you save time and be more convenient, especially when you are on a tight work schedule.

If you are diagnosed, your doctor will assess you to determine if you require medication titration. You will be asked to fill out forms that vary by provider but the most important ones are self-report questionnaires as well as medical histories from childhood to adulthood. They will help your physician identify any conditions that could mean you shouldn't take ADHD medications if they're prescribed.

If you are titrated, the medication will be a combination stimulants and nonstimulant medications. These will be carefully trialled and monitored to determine the most effective combination for you, taking into consideration any existing conditions you have. The titration can be how long does adhd titration take and may require a number of additional appointments before your dose is stable.

Depending on the kind of medication you are taking, follow up appointments will be either monthly or quarterly. Your physician will make sure whether you are stable on the medication, note any side effects you have experienced and make any necessary adjustments to ensure you remain on a dose that is safe. You are required to attend an annual health check-up and regular health check-up that includes blood pressure, pulse, and weight measurements.

For some individuals, it may be that they are satisfied with their medication and don't require an additional discussion regarding their titration. However, for those who require further discussion about their titration and treatment plans, it's possible that they will be referred back to the private clinic that performed their initial assessment. If this occurs, the titration consultation will be included in their consultation fees and they will be given their medication through private prescription (see Consultation fees above). This can cost more than a prescription from the NHS, as the pharmacy will charge you for the medication.
