Behind every cup of coffee that we drink, there is a carefully graded beans. These beans are analyzed in accordance with their size as well as color, shape, and density.

The AA rating is given to coffee beans that meet the above criteria, with the exception that they are not allowed to contain more than 3 defects (quakers). They are typically Kenya AA beans.

Arabica

Arabica coffee beans, also referred to as Coffea arabica are the most coveted type of bean around the globe. Legend has it that coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia when the goat herder saw his herd's dancing more vigorously after eating the fruits of the coffee plant. This led him to try roasting and making the seeds, resulting in the beverage we know and cherish today.

While many types of coffee plants exist however, there are two species that are used as the base for our favorite coffees: robusta and arabica. The taste of the final drink is typically better when you drink the former.

There are many varieties of arabica cultivars, each each possessing its own distinctive flavor profile. Two of the most well-known varieties are Typica and Bourbon from which all other varieties of arabica were developed either by natural mutation or intentional crossbreeding. The SL28 cultivar, for example was developed in Kenya by Scott Labs and is known for its distinct chocolate flavor.

The flavour of a given arabica variety will be determined by the climate in which it is grown, as well as how it is treated and roasted. For example, the type of shade a tree gets, its altitude and soil composition may all play an important role in the final result.

Robusta

Robusta coffee beans (Coffea canephora) are the second most sought-after variety of coffee. They are the beans used for the majority of instant drinks and have twice as much caffeine as Arabica Coffee Beans. They also are used to make a variety of espresso blends - especially for cappuccino, caffe latte, and other coffee drinks.

The Coffea Canephora plant originated in Sub-Saharan Africa, but it has since been cultivated all over the globe. It can grow at lower altitudes and can withstand higher temperatures than the Arabica coffee plant, making it a more convenient crop for farmers. Vietnam is currently the biggest producer of robusta coffee, followed by Brazil and Indonesia.

It's often regarded as inferior quality coffee and many large coffee producers make use of arabica beans to create top quality products.

However the demand for premium coffee is growing, and smaller roasters are exploring premium robusta varieties to make the most of its exceptional qualities. Our Valhalla Java and Death With Coffee are two exceptional robusta coffees. They are mixed with arabica to give the perfect balance of strength and flavour. These coffees originate from Uganda which is a country in which robusta is a staple of the coffee industry for many years. You can learn more about them here.

Liberica

Liberica coffee beans are rare varieties that are rarely used in the world. They comprise less than 2% of the world's coffee consumption, and are often overlooked since they don't have the same amount of caffeine that Arabica and Robusta do. However, they do have a unique flavor that coffee lovers find irresistible.

Liberica organic coffee beans beans, though extremely scarce and extremely scarce, are still quite well-loved in a few parts of Asia. They are especially common in Malaysia and Indonesia as they have large Muslim population. The coffee industry in these countries has historically been very robust, and drinking coffee during prayer is a part of the tradition.

Liberica coffee's history dates back to 1890s which was the time when a global epidemic caused by rust on the coffee leaf caused a massive loss of the arabica crop. This event prompted 500g coffee beans producers to look for a resilient plant that would thrive in tropical climates. They soon discovered the Liberica.

Liberica plants are resistant to diseases and pests which makes them a great replacement for the destroyed arabica crop. Liberica can also grow in lower altitudes as well as hot temperatures which enables it to thrive in the climate of Southeast Asia. Liberica beans are used to make the majority of the coffee in the Philippines and Indonesia.

Excelsa

While it's not usual for coffee drinkers to find excelsa beans in their cups, these exclusive beans are starting to gain the reputation of having a distinct flavor. According to Komal Sable of South India Coffee Co. who is a fifth-generation farmer of coffee the beans have a similar teardrop-shaped shape, but are smaller. But despite this family resemblance, it's important to note that excelsa is technically not a separate species.

It's not clear how to categorize excelsa beans. This confusion is to blame for the low existence of these beans in the modern world of coffee. Due to this, many roasters, growers and brewers aren't sure how to cultivate or utilize these beans effectively.

It is ultimately up to the individual to determine whether they enjoy the flavor of excelsa coffee. It could take a time to find a blend that matches their tastes. It is important to be open and try different kinds of coffee until you've discovered the one that you like. You'll get to explore the wide range of options these unique beans offer. This is a journey worth taking.
