Robots like the Roomba that are outfitted with powerful hardware and sensors can gather a lot of data. However, their privacy policies typically hide the fact that humans will be looking at this data.

For example, a policy for the mop-and-vacuum combination Combo j9+ says that humans will be viewing images of rug and other obstacles. These images aid in improving the device's obstacle avoidance algorithms.

Roomba i3 EVO

The i3 is a great robot for flooring that is not bare, as it is excellent in removing small particles. It also does a great job with pet hair, but it has a difficult time picking up large clumps of hair on carpeting. The only major disadvantage is its high recurring costs.

The Roomba i3 EVO has an identical design to the i1 however it has a significant upgrade: imprint-based intelligent mapping. This technology lets the robot remember specific rooms of your home and clean them more efficiently. You can even mark rooms using the i3 EVO's buttons, or use the IRobot Roomba 776P Robot Vacuum: Efficient Cleaning Solution app to set virtual boundary lines, which will stop the robot from cleaning areas that you don't want it to. The i3 EVO has the largest dustbin of all the robots we evaluated at 0.5 milliliters.

The i3 EVO, as most robots requires regular maintenance to perform properly. iRobot recommends cleaning its brushes at least once a week -- or twice if you have pets. To do this, flip the robot over and press the green button that lets the brushes go. Take the brushes out and then wipe them clean with a microfiber towel. You should also wipe down the six sensors on the bottom of the robot.

When purchasing a new Roomba you must also be aware that the filters and brushes provided by the manufacturer need to be replaced regularly. You can track the status of these components by navigating to the Product Health tab in the Irobot app. The i3 EVO filters should be changed every two months, and the brushes between six and 12 months.

iRobot's patent-pending Dirt Detect Technology utilizes sensors to detect areas of dirt and improve suction in the areas. This feature is especially helpful in homes with lots of furniture since it helps the robot avoid getting stuck under things and ensures all surfaces are cleaned. The i3 EVO is also compatible with Alexa which allows you to control the robot via voice commands. It doesn't have the same features for avoiding obstacles as other models, such as the i8+, j7+ and s9+.

Roomba 694

The Roomba 694 is an excellent entry-level robot vacuum. It is small enough to fit under furniture and is thorough when it comes cleaning. It also works well on bare floors and does a great job of picking up pet hair (though not as effectively as more expensive models). It has limited automation options and is not compatible with Alexa or Google Assistant.

The 694 is powered by an interchangeable Li-ion battery that is user-replaceable. It takes approximately two hours for the battery charge to be fully when the bot is docked at Home Base. After it is fully charged, the 694 can continue the same way it left off in its last cleaning session, or start a new one. It comes with an RCON and infrared sensor that keep it away from stairs.

This Roomba is available in red, white or black. Its round ninja-like shape is enhanced by the matte black plastic around the sides and an iRobot logo on the top. The center of the robot has an enormous button that reads "Clean" written in green text. Spot cleaning and home buttons are placed around the center. A light on top of the screen shows battery levels: a green outline means it has sufficient power, while the red color indicates that it's low or on the charger.

Although the Roomba 694 does not have a self-emptying feature as the higher-end models however, it does a great job of emptying its own dustbin every time it comes back to Home Base. The bin can hold around 60 days' worth of trash. It's easy to empty it manually. Simply press the release button, pull it out, and then dump it in the garbage.

The iRobot app is essential when the 694 since it's where you can alter your cleaning schedules and look at the history of previous cleaning sessions. You can also create virtual boundaries for the robot to avoid certain areas in your home and schedule cleanings in advance. The app can suggest extra cleanings when pollen season is in full swing or when you have pets that shed a lot.

Roomba 980

The 980, one iRobot's more recent robots, is controlled by an official app for iPhone or Android. The app connects to your home's WiFi. The 980 is able to be controlled from any location, whether you're across town, on the street, or even a thousand kilometers away.

You can also do cool things with the app for instance, you can schedule multiple cleaning sessions per day and adjust settings, such as what surface to focus on at each session. You can also set it up to automatically return to the charging station after it's full. This feature is particularly useful when the 980 is frequently left to clean going to work.

The 980, like other Roomba models in the past, uses a set of sensors to navigate your home. The iAdapt 2.0 navigational system will map your home as you move, recognizing distinct characteristics and generating a map based on pictures that helps the robot to navigate more efficiently. This lets the 980 skip spots that have already been cleaned, and it's much more adept at avoiding furniture and other obstacles.

A suite of advanced cleaning sensors can help the 980 get the job done. The two multi-surface brushes are specifically designed to remove large debris and dirt, and the smart Power Boost feature increases the power of the vacuum when it is cleaning carpets. The robot can also be operated with the included remote, or voice commands thanks to the integration with Google Assistant and Alexa.

The 980 isn't cheap, however, it is worth the cost because it does a great job at picking up dust and other particles. The latest battery technology enables it to keep cleaning longer than the previous versions. It also comes with an app that makes it easy to plan cleaning sessions. The only thing that is not right with the 980 is that it does not come with an extra battery. If your battery fails it is necessary to purchase one online.

Roomba 960

It can be started with a push button on the robot, via the app, or by using voice commands via Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also be scheduled to clean at a specific time.

The 960 is a great choice for floors that are carpeted or bare. Its iAdapt sensors adapt to the surface and its dual rubber brush picks pet hair without tangling. It also features a full bin detector that alerts users when the bin is nearing full. It utilizes the irobot robot vacuums Home App to control the robot, and also set up cleaning schedules.

Its navigation is superb and it can easily navigate a large, single-story home with both bare and carpeted floors. It was able in our tests to return to the docking station after cleaning cycles were completed. The ability to map dirt and dirt-detection are also impressive. It can remember a pattern and locate debris on the flooring. It can also get through and around a variety of obstacles, like the legs of tables and seats.

The downside to the 960 is that it doesn't have the carpet boost technology available on the 980. Also, its carpet cleaning performance isn't quite as good as the standards set by other models in the series. It is still a good option for homes with a lot of space and comes at a reasonable price.

Like all robot vacuums The 960 will require replacement maintenance parts periodically. The iRobot App tracks how often you need to replace your filter, dust bin and spinning brush. In general you should expect to spend about $35 a year for these replacements. You can purchase replacement parts directly from iRobot, or via third-party sellers.
